Net Zero Island Competition Launch – Thursday 16th October 2025 & Competition Pitch 3rd December 2025

The UK government has set a target of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 as it looks to slow the pace of climate change and minimise its consequences on people, places, businesses, and nature. The Bradford District have set a more ambitious target of achieving Net Zero by 2038.

The Net Zero Island challenge sees teams of Year 9 students develop ideas for sustainable living on a fictional island.

The teams of up to six pupils explore how they would produce energy for heating and cooking, fuel transport and manage waste and water for a population of 30,000, without creating carbon emissions.

The project allows the teams to collaborate and carry out research into new and existing innovative ways to support the journey to Net Zero. On the subsequent date, students pitch their ideas to a panel of judges made up from industry representatives and council officials.
