Engineering Leaders of the Future

The engineering leaders of the future were on display as Bradford Manufacturing Weeks successfully held its Women in Manufacturing event.

Staged at Bradford’s Bronte Girls Secondary Academy, attendees were able to hear from an expert panel of some of the region’s leading figures in the world of engineering and manufacturing.

While Yorkshire is home to some of the finest female engineers and business leaders in manufacturing, the level of young women entering the sector remains low. Today’s event was designed to address this by showcasing the exciting and lucrative opportunities that the sector can bring people from all walks of life.

After being welcomed to the event by the Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin, who hailed the young women and attendance as well as the “amazing leaders in manufacturing” on the panel.

Ms Brabin said: “What a brilliant morning at the Brontë Girls Academy supporting Bradford Manufacturing Weeks. It was inspirational.

“We have more manufacturing jobs than in anywhere else. We were the hub of the Industrial Revolution and, as I have seen going around the region, that has pivoted to tackling the climate emergency, to new innovations and to AI.”

Among the manufacturing leaders speaking to students were:

–             Debbie Mellor, Keighley Laboratories.

–             Dr Elaine Brown, University of Bradford’s Faculty of Engineering

–             Alisha Nadeem, University of Bradford Biomedical Engineering Student

–             Ayesha Nawaz, Solenis

–             Julie Roberts, Christeyns

–             Charlotte Meek, Stitch Society

–             Louise, Frankland, Mansfield Pollard

Now in its sixth year, Bradford Manufacturing Weeks has successfully connected dozens of the region’s leading manufacturers to new generations of talent, with more than 15,000 young people given experiences of what it is like to work in the sector.

Sponsors for 2023 are Bradford Council, the University of Bradford, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, Natwest and Azets. Bradford Manufacturing Weeks runs until October 20th.
