Government renews subsidies for Drax

West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce today welcomes the announcement from Government regarding renewed subsidies for Drax, a move which will provide a support mechanism for sustainable biomass generation beyond 2027.

The support for Drax is part of a wider transition to sustainable alternatives and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. If approved, the plan will keep Drax running until 2031 and is estimated to generate consumer savings of up to £3.1 billion.

Drax generates five per cent of the UK’s electricity, enough power for five million homes, and this announcement prioritises energy security in the transition to sustainable energy generation.

Mark Casci, Head of Policy and Representation at West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce: “The announcement today will be welcome news for businesses who have seen their energy bills soar since the pandemic.

“Energy security is a fundamental foundation for the Chamber for economic growth, so we welcome this commitment to prioritise sustainable biomass generation.

“Yorkshire has the capacity to be a world-leading epicentre for carbon capture and renewable energy. This announcement brings that potential one step closer to reality.”
