YNY Chamber backing York Museums Trust

York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce today issues its backing to York’s world class cultural assets during a time of challenging finances for the sector.

York Museums Trust, which operates the Yorkshire Museum, York Castle Museum and York Art Gallery, is set to end the financial year with a £111,000 deficit, up from £54,000 in 2023-4.

And while a £1m line of credit from City of York Council has been made available to the Trust, this sum is set to run out next year as costs for repairs continue to pile up.

Sarah Czarnecki, president of York & North Yorkshire Chamber, said: “York is a magnet for visitors from across the globe and our museums and galleries are among the best in Britain.

“These unique cultural assets must be cherished and protected at all costs. To do otherwise would risk us losing the very soul of the city.

“The Chamber offers York Museums Trust its unequivocal support during these challenging times.”
