Supporting WYLP’s Digital Poverty Project

West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce is appealing to local businesses to consider donating surplus IT equipment to help young people in their education pathways.

A scheme has been launched by Chamber member West Yorkshire Learning Providers (WYLP) to help young learners less able to access the digital equipment needed to achieve a good education.  Apprentices, trainees and adult education learners are not supported by other digital poverty initiatives, and so the Chamber and other stakeholders are working with WYLP to encourage more organisations to come forward.

All donated equipment is being wiped clean to comply with data protection and other security regulations, and two collection hubs are currently available for dropping off equipment, with more to follow.

Mike Cartwright, from West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said:

“Various news reports have revealed that young people are being adversely affected by the pandemic, including finding employment. Being able to access learning from their homes will continue to be important this year.  That’s why we are encouraging local businesses to look through their IT stock to consider if anything can be donated to this worthy project.”

Alex Miles of WYLP added:

“We believe learners of any age and any stage of their education journey deserve to access equipment that supports their progression and move them onto positive destinations.  We are appealing to local businesses and communities to donate laptops, iPads, tablets and other equipment so that learners can continue their education pathway and progress with their future careers, employment, or training.”

Drop-off points for equipment currently include WYLP’s office at Bradford Chamber Business Park, New Lane, Bradford, BD4 8BX and the Kirkgate Centre in Bradford.  To arrange a donation, contact beth.vickers@wylp.org.uk or phone 01274 665454.
