Plans to redevelop York’s iconic Coney Street approved

West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce today warmly welcomes the news that plans to redevelop York’s iconic Coney Street have been given the go ahead.

Planning committee members at City of York Council gave Chamber members Helmsley Group the green light to enact its ambitious plans to regenerate 250,000 sq ft of Coney Street’s retail, leisure, commercial and residential spaces – including the creation of a riverside walkway and student accommodation.

The development will breathe new life into the historic street, with the introduction of boutique, independent retail experiences to the street as well as bringing Coney Street and the River Ouse together to create a fantastic waterfront experience.

In so doing, the riverfront will become accessible to all of York’s citizens and visitors, with the newly created riverfront having the potential to stage outdoor performance and music concerts.

Independent analysis from chartered surveyors and planers Aspinall Verdi, alongside economic development consultants Kada Research published in March this year said the plan would deliver £175m in economic benefits to York over the next 15 years, meaning for every £1 invested, £3.93 would be generated for the city.

West & North Yorkshire Chamber lobbied and campaigned extensively to get Helmsley Group’s application approved.

Sarah Czarnecki, president of York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This move will be a game changer for York.

“Coney Street is now set to deliver a retail and leisure experience to rival any destination in Britain.

“Congratulations to Helmsley Group on its ambitious plans and to City of York Council for its foresight and prudence in approving this application.”
